The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process of formation whereby adults (and their children) who are not Catholic, learn about the beliefs of the Catholic Church in order to become members of the Church. The process is based on the ancient practice of the Catechumenate that the early Church used to give necessary formation to those wishing to follow Christ. The length of time for this formation depends upon the individual's personal situation:
| • |
Those who are not baptized: Those individuals who are not baptized must go through the RCIA formation and receive all of the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. |
| • |
Those who were baptized, but not raised as Christians: These individuals must go through the RCIA formation in order to learn more about the Faith. |
| • |
Those who were baptized and raised in a Christan family and have some connection to the Catholic Faith: These individuals will need to go through a shorter period of the RCIA formation. |
Of what does RCIA Consist?
| 1. |
Period of Inquiry |
|
This period is a presentation/question/answer period that focuses on the basics of the Catholic Faith. No commitments are expected during this period. |
| 2. |
Period of Catechumenate |
|
In this period, the individual is accepted as a member (not fully initiated) of the Church and this takes place at a public ceremony in church called the Rite of Acceptance. The formation in this period consists of a comprehensive presentation of the faith, prayer life, liturgy of the Church and guidance in living a moral life. |
| 3. |
Period of Enlightenment |
|
This period begins with a second public ceremony in church called the Rite of Election before the assembly and before the Bishop. The formation in this period is a stronger period of reflection and more prayerful as the individual prepares to receive the gifts of grace from God and prepares to receive the Sacraments of Initiation. |
| 4. |
Initiation |
|
At the Easter Vigil held on Holy Saturday night, the individual receives the Sacrament of Initiation and becomes a fully initiated member of the Church. The individual will celebrate the resurrection of the Lord with all other members of the Church. |
| 5. |
Post-Baptismal Catechesis (Teaching) |
|
This is a reflective period when the individual considers what he or she has received inthe Sacraments and also serves as a reminder that this Inititation is a beginning in his or her life as a Christian. |
